About King John

King John plays in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. Shakespeare’s rarely performed play is set after the death of Richard the Lionheart, as John steps into the role of king and tries to establish his own authority while facing pressure, conflict and power struggles across nations.

Performed in the intimate, candlelit setting of the Playhouse, the production follows a ruler determined to keep the crown and maintain control. Olivier-nominated director Jaz Woodcock-Stewart, known for Paradise Now! at the Bush Theatre, makes her Globe directorial debut with the play.
