King John at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Shakespeare's rarely performed play, presented in the venue's intimate, candlelit setting. It follows King John as he tries to step out of the shadow of his brother, Richard the Lionheart, and establish his own rule.
As John works to hold on to the crown, the story moves through conflict, turbulence and power struggles across nations. Olivier-nominated director Jaz Woodcock-Stewart, whose work includes Paradise Now! at the Bush Theatre, makes her Globe directorial debut with this production.
The play places Shakespeare's political drama in a close-up theatre space, bringing the shifting alliances and pressures of the story into focus.
Key facts: Suitable for all ages, but the play features violence, death, including child death, and depictions of war.
