King John at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is Shakespeare’s rarely performed play about the king who follows Richard the Lionheart and tries to establish his own authority. Staged in the intimate, candlelit playhouse, it follows John as he steps into a role he claims by right and faces the turbulence that comes with ruling England.

Driven to prove himself after Richard’s death, John’s reign becomes a struggle to keep the crown and maintain control as power struggles unfold across nations. The play turns on questions of loyalty, authority and survival.

Olivier-nominated director Jaz Woodcock-Stewart, known for Paradise Now! at the Bush Theatre, makes her Globe directorial debut with this production.

Suitable for all ages, but the play features violence, death, including child death, and depictions of war.
