King John at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse brings Shakespeare’s rarely performed play to the venue’s intimate, candlelit setting. After the death of Richard the Lionheart, John must step into the role he claims as his right and try to hold on to power as the struggle for the crown spreads across England and beyond.
The production is directed by Olivier-nominated Jaz Woodcock-Stewart, making her Globe directorial debut. The play follows a ruler determined to prove himself, as political tension, chaos and competing claims test his authority.
