About King John

King John is Shakespeare’s rarely performed play at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, staged in the venue’s intimate, candlelit setting. The story follows John as he steps into power after the death of Richard the Lionheart and tries to define his own rule while facing conflict, pressure and competing claims to the crown.

As John works to hold on to control, the play moves through political tension, turbulence and power struggles across nations. This production marks Olivier-nominated director Jaz Woodcock-Stewart’s Globe directorial debut.
