The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance production, loosely based on Bizet’s opera. It takes the familiar story into a 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West, where the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger unsettles a small town.
Fuelled by heat and desire, the story follows a chain of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. The production features one of New Adventures’ most recognisable scores, with music by Terry Davies and Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite after Bizet’s Carmen.
Combining vivid storytelling with a dramatic score, The Car Man is presented as a dance thriller built around tension, atmosphere and character-driven drama.
Running time: 1 hour 55 minutes, including one 20 minute interval.
This production uses haze, theatrical smoke effects and a gunshot effect. It is recommended for ages 12 and over, and strictly no under 5s are allowed.
