Cinderella at Sadler’s Wells Theatre is New Adventures’ 30th anniversary production of Matthew Bourne’s acclaimed version of the fairytale. Set in London during the Second World War, it presents a wartime romance at the heart of the story, as Cinderella and a young RAF pilot meet, fall in love, and are then separated by the Blitz.
The production brings together Lez Brotherston’s Olivier Award-winning designs, lighting by Olivier Award-winning Neil Austin, video and projection designs by Duncan McLean, and sound design by Paul Groothuis. Together, these elements are used to place the audience in the sights and sounds of war-torn London.
Matthew Bourne’s storytelling gives this familiar tale a distinctly period setting and a strong emotional focus, combining the classic fairy tale with the realities of life in London during the war.
