Ballet Black 25 at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London, marks twenty-five years of Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black. The anniversary season brings together a double bill that reflects the company’s history of original storytelling, collaboration and mentoring, while looking ahead to the future.
The programme includes Ingoma (2019), the choreographic debut of former company dancer Mthuthuzeli November. Inspired by the 1946 South African miners’ strike, it focuses on the suffering and resilience of Black miners and their communities. The piece won the 2020 Olivier Award and the Black British Theatre Award for Best Dance Production.
It is paired with …all towards hope, a new commission by Hope Boykin, who makes her UK choreographic debut. Boykin is a two-time Bessie Award winner, and the work has been created for Ballet Black’s 25th year as a tribute to the company’s journey and future.
