Ballet Black 25 at Sadler's Wells Theatre marks twenty-five years of Cassa Pancho’s Ballet Black, a company that has brought original stories to stages across the UK and created opportunities for dancers and artists of Black and Asian descent. This anniversary programme looks back at a quarter of a century of innovation, mentoring and collaboration, while also pointing towards the company’s future.
The double bill opens with Ingoma (2019), the choreographic debut of former Ballet Black dancer Mthuthuzeli November. Inspired by the 1946 South African miners’ strike, it tells a story of suffering and resilience through the experiences of Black miners and their communities. Ingoma won the 2020 Olivier Award and the Black British Theatre Award for Best Dance Production.
Also in the programme is …all towards hope., a new commission by Hope Boykin. A two-time Bessie Award winner, Boykin is making her UK choreographic debut with a celebratory work created especially for Ballet Black’s 25th year.
