Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. Troy Maxson has cheated death once, but the past keeps closing in. At home, the pressure builds as his wife, Rose, tries to hold the family together while their son Cory looks towards a future with more freedom than Troy ever had.
As dreams collide and tempers flare, the Maxsons move towards a reckoning. This new production is directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey, whose work includes Red Pitch in the West End. Written by one of America’s most influential 20th-century writers, the play is presented here as a story of ambition for our time.
