Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in the 1950s and returning in a new production directed by Daniel Bailey, whose work includes Red Pitch and the West End.
Troy Maxson has cheated death once, but the past continues to press in. On the streets of Pittsburgh he jokes and tells stories, while at home the strain builds. Rose is trying to hold the family together as she looks towards a changing world and hopes their son Cory will have more freedom than Troy did.
As dreams clash and tempers rise, the Maxson family is pushed towards a reckoning. The play brings together family tension, ambition and the realities of a changing time in a story from one of America’s most influential 20th century writers.
