About Fences
Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson's landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It follows Troy Maxson, who has cheated death once but cannot leave the past behind, as pressure builds at home and family tensions grow.
Rose tries to hold the family together while their son Cory looks towards a future with more freedom than Troy ever had. The production is directed by the award-winning Daniel Bailey, whose work includes Red Pitch in the West End.
Wilson's story centres on ambition, conflict and the effects of a changing world on one family.
