Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It follows Troy Maxson, who has cheated death once, as pressure builds at home and the past closes in around him.
At the centre of the story is Troy’s family life: his wife, Rose, tries to hold everything together, while their son Cory hopes for a future with more freedom than Troy has known. As dreams collide and tempers rise, the family moves towards a reckoning that could change everything they know.
This new production is directed by the award-winning Daniel Bailey, whose work includes Red Pitch in the West End. Written by one of America’s most influential 20th century playwrights, the play brings a family conflict into sharp focus against a changing world.
