Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It follows Troy Maxson, whose past keeps pressing in as he jokes and spins stories on the streets, while at home the pressure builds around his wife, Rose, and their son Cory.
Directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey, this new production explores ambition, family and the strain of change. Written by one of America’s most influential 20th century writers, it centres on a family facing a reckoning that could reshape everything they know.
