Fences at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It centres on Troy Maxson, who has cheated death once, but now finds the past closing in at home and in the street outside.
As Troy jokes and tells stories, pressure builds within the family. His wife, Rose, tries to hold things together while their son Cory looks towards a future with more freedom than Troy has known. When hopes and temper flare, the Maxsons move towards a reckoning.
Directed by the award-winning Daniel Bailey, whose work includes Red Pitch in the West End, this production brings one of America’s most influential 20th-century writers back to the stage in a new interpretation.
