Fences at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre is August Wilson’s landmark play, set in 1950s Pittsburgh. It follows Troy Maxson, who has cheated death once, as the past keeps pressing in on his life at home.
At the centre of the story are Troy, his wife Rose and their son Cory. As hopes for a different future meet old pressures and hard choices, the family moves towards a reckoning that could reshape everything they know.
This new production is directed by award-winning Daniel Bailey, whose work includes Red Pitch in the West End. Wilson’s play comes from one of America’s most influential 20th-century writers and explores ambition, family and the force of the past.
