My Neighbour Totoro is playing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London’s West End. This stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated film follows one summer in the lives of sisters Satsuki and Mei, and explores childhood, imagination and the fantasy world that shapes their experience.
Created in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, and brought to the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company with Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi, the production is adapted by Tom Morton-Smith. It has won six Olivier Awards.
Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.
Age guidance: recommended for ages 6+. The production is not suitable for children under 6, including babes in arms, and children under 4 will not be admitted into the auditorium. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, seated with them throughout the visit. Every person entering the theatre needs a valid ticket. Children must occupy their own seat at all times, and single seats cannot be left in a row when booking.
The show includes puppets, some large-scale and used in audience space, themes of an ill parent in hospital, and live music and sound effects that can be loud at times and may be scary for some younger children. Younger children and babes in arms are welcome at relaxed performances.
