My Neighbour Totoro at the Gillian Lynne Theatre is Studio Ghibli’s celebrated 1988 story brought to the West End by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Improbable and Nippon TV. Adapted by Tom Morton-Smith and with Executive Producer Joe Hisaishi, it is a record-breaking production that has won six Olivier Awards.
The show follows sisters Satsuki and Mei during one extraordinary summer, combining a coming-of-age story with the magical fantasy world of childhood and imagination. It is presented as a stage production of the film, with a strong focus on the story’s emotional core and visual theatre.
The staging includes puppets, including some large-scale puppets that interact in audience space, alongside live music and sound effects.
Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes, including a 20-minute interval.
Age recommendation: 6+. The production is not suitable for children under 4 years old, including babes in arms. Children must occupy their own seats throughout, and all guests aged 16 or under must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over, seated with them.
All persons entering the theatre, regardless of age, must have a valid ticket. Single seats cannot be left in a row when booking. The show features puppets, themes of an ill parent in hospital, and loud sound effects that may be scary for some younger children. Younger children and babes in arms are welcome at relaxed performances. It is the customer’s responsibility to check suitability for any children in their party.
