RENT at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London, marks thirty years since Jonathan Larson’s musical first redefined musical theatre. Directed by Luke Sheppard, this new West End production is inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème and follows a generation facing uncertainty while holding on to joy, resilience and connection.
Starring Gaten Matarazzo as Mark, RENT brings Larson’s score back to the West End in a story centred on community and the effort to make every moment count. It is presented as a contemporary musical with themes that remain relevant to audiences today.
Thirty years after its original impact, RENT continues to resonate through its story, characters and music.
Running time: 2 hours and 45 minutes, including one interval.
Age guidance: recommended for ages 14+. The production contains themes of HIV/AIDS, bereavement, drug use, suicide, sex and sex work, along with strong language, smoking, haze and strobe lighting.
