About

About Franz & Marie

Franz & Marie at The Arches, London, is a musical adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck. Set in the world of late 19th-century European folklore, it follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed at an isolated outpost after front-line action, as nightmares and hallucinations blur the line between reality and trauma.

Franz lives for Marie and their baby, Georgie, and the story centres on his efforts to provide for them while they are unable to marry during the war. The show uses Indie Raw Folk and was originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom, before being reimagined from a Singing Loins show.

Key facts: This production features a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians and is adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard, based on the book and lyrics by Chris Broderick, with music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick of The Singing Loins.
