About Franz & Marie

Franz & Marie at The Arches, London is a musical adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, set in late 19th-century European folklore. It follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed with a platoon at an isolated outpost after front-line action, as he struggles with nightmares and hallucinations on his return.

The story centres on Franz’s devotion to Marie and their baby, Georgie. Unable to take leave or marry during the war, he tries to provide for them while living with the effects of trauma and the pressures of army life.

Originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom, Franz & Marie has been reimagined as a folk musical for a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians. It is directed by Michael Oakley and adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard, based on the book and lyrics by Chris Broderick, with music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick of The Singing Loins.
