Franz & Marie at The Arches, London is a stage adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, set in the twisted world of late 19th-century European folklore. It follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed at an isolated outpost, where nightmares and hallucinations blur the line between reality and trauma.
Franz lives for Marie and their baby, Georgie, and the story centres on his efforts to provide for them while he cannot take leave during the war or marry. The production was originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and was created by key members of The Singing Loins.
Directed by Michael Oakley, Franz & Marie was adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard from the book and lyrics by Chris Broderick. The production also features music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick, arrangements, orchestrations and additional music by Steven Edis, choreography by Ben Wright, lighting design by Christopher Nairne, sound design by Andrew Johnson and Oscar Cotran, and design by Bretta Gerecke.
