Franz & Marie at The Arches is a musical adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, set in the world of late 19th-century European folklore. After action on the front line, a platoon of young soldiers has been stationed at an isolated outpost for months, waiting for further orders.

At the centre is Franz Woyzeck, a man haunted by nightmares since his return. He sees fire in the sky and experiences hallucinations that blur the line between reality and trauma. Franz lives for Marie and their baby, Georgie, and the story follows his struggle to provide for them while war prevents them from marrying.

The production reimagines the Singing Loins show with indie raw folk and was originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom. It was created by key members of Kentish underground band The Singing Loins and adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard, with direction by Michael Oakley.
