About Franz & Marie

Franz & Marie at The Arches, London is a stage adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, retold as a musical set in the twisted world of late 19th Century European folklore. It follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier stationed at an isolated outpost after action on the front line, as he struggles with nightmares and hallucinations that blur reality and trauma.

The story centres on Franz’s devotion to Marie and their baby, Georgie. Unable to take leave during the war, he cannot marry Marie, but continues to try to provide for her and their child.

Originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and created by members of The Singing Loins, Franz & Marie has been reimagined for the stage with a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians.
