Franz & Marie at The Arches is a stage adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, set in a late 19th century European folklore world. It follows Franz Woyzeck, a soldier posted to an isolated outpost after front-line action, as he struggles with nightmares and hallucinations that blur reality and trauma.
The story centres on Franz’s devotion to Marie and their baby, Georgie. Forbidden from taking leave during the war, he and Marie have not been able to marry, but he remains determined to provide for them.
Originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and created by members of The Singing Loins, Franz & Marie has been adapted for the stage by Teresa Howard from the book and lyrics by Chris Broderick, with music by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick. Direction is by Michael Oakley.
