Franz & Marie at The Arches, London is a musical adaptation of Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck, set in the world of late 19th-century European folklore. It follows Franz Woyzeck, a young soldier stationed at an isolated outpost after frontline action, as he waits for orders and struggles with nightmares and hallucinations.
Franz’s life is centred on Marie and their baby, Georgie. Unable to take leave during the war, he cannot marry Marie, but remains determined to provide for his family.
The production was originally commissioned two decades ago by the award-winning Korean company Acom and was created by key members of The Singing Loins. It has been reimagined with a 14-strong cast of actor-musicians and music in the Indie Raw Folk style.
