Flunk are a Norwegian trip-hop and electronic indie pop band formed in Oslo in 2000-2001 by producer and programmer Ulf Nygaardand guitarist Jo Bakke, later joined by vocalist Anja Øyen Vister. Blending atmospheric electronica, downtempo beats, dreamy acoustic guitars and delicate, ethereal vocals, the group developed a distinctive sound influenced by trip-hop, dream pop, folk and ambient music. Signed to Norway's independent Beatservice Records, Flunk attracted international attention with their debut album For Sleepyheads Only (2002), particularly their beautifully understated reinterpretation of New Order'sBlue Monday, which became an underground favourite and introduced the band to audiences worldwide.
Their second album, Morning Star (2004), further established their reputation for sophisticated, atmospheric songwriting, featuring the acclaimed singles On My Balcony and Play, the latter gaining wider exposure through the American television series The O.C.. Subsequent releases included Play America (2005), Personal Stereo (2007), This Is What You Get (2009) and Lost Causes (2013), alongside several remix collections. Their music combined hypnotic electronic rhythms with shimmering guitars and Vister's haunting vocals, drawing comparisons with Massive Attack, Portishead, Morcheeba, Zero 7 and Air. With drummer Erik Ruud contributing to their live performances and later recordings, Flunk developed an international following through extensive touring, festival appearances and music featured in film and television.
Continuing to evolve throughout the 2010s and 2020s, Flunk released Chemistry and Math (2017), History of Everything Ever (2021) and the covers collection Cover Ups, Vol. 1 & 2 (2023), demonstrating their gift for transforming familiar songs into atmospheric electronic arrangements. Their latest 2025 studio album, Take Me Places, accompanied by plans for a farewell tour following the band's announcement that they would be bringing their long-running musical journey to a close.
