Review of Pauline Vallance: Song Swap-o-Rama

Overall rating: 4.5 Verified review

The premise is simple - one song to the tune of another - inspired by the game of the same name in Radio 4's "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue", and apparently begun as a tribute following the death of regular panellist Tim Brooke-Taylor. The words and tunes are mostly very familiar (Don't ask me to name any operatic arias!), but hilariously mismatched.

I'll try to avoid spoilers, but examples include a deeply spiritual biblical story set to an up-tempo stage dance tune, sexually suggestive words to a children's TV theme tune (only suggestive though - nothing offensive), and a 1970s comedy about teenage romance and betrayal set to the most traditional of English folk tunes (I'll allow one spoiler - one of the audience apparently went on a date with the "moron" mentioned in the chorus.)

The Radio 4 original is often funny because the panellists' improvisations go wrong. Pauline's humour is different, more crafted, but the audience often laughed out loud.
