Monsieur le Comte d'Avignon, a wealthy French aristocrat exiled in London, has not arisen in time from his nap for his usual evening drink at the Yacht Club. To his guests' horror he is discovered dead, poisoned by one of his acquaintances.

Enter Inspector Cartwright, determined to investigate and bring the perpetrator to justice. But who could it be; one of le Comte's alimony-obsessed two ex wives, snobby Sara or brassy Tracey, his old chum the Colonel, his butler Stackhouse, sozzled housekeeper Mrs Huggins, Left-wing son Louis, or flirty Fifi, the French maid?
