A gig paying tribute to Stone Roses bassist Gary “Mani” Mounfield will come to Manchester in May.
The Manchester music legend, also a former member of Primal Scream, died from respiratory issues in November, aged 63.
The gig - dubbed ‘Manichester’ - comes to the 5,000-capacity venue Diecast on Saturday 30th May, with a lineup of artists who either performed with Mani or were inspired by him.
Assembled by former Ocean Colour Scene bassist Damon Minchella, the gig will see Cast, Peter Hook, The Kowloons, and a “specially assembled core band” featuring Aziz Ibrahim (Stone Roses), Rowetta (Happy Mondays), Simone Butler (Primal Scream), and Mick Rossi (Slaughter & the Dogs).
There will also be an “all-star roster from across five decades of guitar music”, with Dave McCabe (The Zutons), Baz Fratelli (The Fratellis), Zak Starkey (Mantra of the Cosmos), Steve White (Paul Weller), Jon McClure (Reverend and the Makers), and more joining.
More names are still to be announced - including the headliner, which will be announced a week before the gig. You can see the full list of confirmed artists so far in the post below.
A post announcing the gig on Instagram reads: “Organised by Madchester.com and GIOGOI, and blessed by Mani’s family, Manichester will unite artists who played with him, learned from him, or were shaped by that iconic low-end rumble that changed British music forever.
“The spark for this tribute came from a moment in São Paulo, when Damon Minchella played the bassline from ‘She Bangs The Drums’ to 80,000 people, and the place erupted. That’s the power of Mani. That’s the legacy we’re honouring.
“All proceeds will support Mani and Imelda’s twin boys, Gene and George, honouring the love, strength and spirit that defined their family.”
Stone Roses guitarist John Squire designed the artwork and will feature on limited-edition physical tickets.
Tickets will be available at madchester.com on 27th March. You can find out more and sign up on Diecast’s website here.
