Björn Yttling’s (of Peter Bjorn and John fame) 'Yttling Jazz' project returns in 2026, seeing him expand upon his already acclaimed 2024 album, Illegal Hit, with five new tracks, including a Morricone-tinged collaboration with Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie, "Strange," which is out now with an accompanying video directed by Henry Moore Selder.

Illegal Hit (Out of Bounds) broadens the scope of the record, spanning three discs and featuring five brand new tracks, extended versions, instrumentals, and a host of collaborators - including Yukimi (Little Dragon), Matt Sweeney, The Tallest Man On Earth, and El Perro Del Mar. Disc one presents the original album in full. In contrast, disc two introduces entirely new material, both vocal-led and instrumental, and disc three gathers reinterpretations and reworks of the original compositions.

“Strange” also marks a natural reunion between Yttling and Gillespie, following their previous collaborations on Primal Scream albums Beautiful Future and Chaosmosis.

Speaking on the collaboration, Björn Yttling said: “I called Bobby and presented the idea to have him sing on a Yttling Jazz track. Sent him some music and within ten minutes he sent back a beautiful demo of ‘Strange.’ Fantastic lyrics and a really cool vibe on this track. The harmonica, vibraphone and Bobby's voice work so well together!”

Bobby Gillespie added: “It was so great to work with Björn Yttling once again. He sent me over some fabulous music by his jazz ensemble and I just happened to have a lyric that fitted perfectly with the mood of the track. I really love the end result. A magical pairing.”

On the expanded release, Yttling explains the origins of the additional material and the thinking behind Out Of Bounds: “I had a few songs that I never quite managed to finish, along with some beautiful versions I ended up shortening to create the right flow for the original album.

"It turned into a bit of a ‘kill your darlings’ situation - especially since the solos I cut are absolutely wonderful. All the more reason it feels great that they're finally coming out now. The new tracks all have quite different characteristics - especially the vocal pieces of course, but the instrumentals as well. Together, they form a strong whole, almost like an entirely new album, while still feeling like part two of Illegal Hit.

"I'm calling the collection Out of Bounds - because these pieces didn't quite make it onto the playing field at the start. But in some sports, and in some contexts, that's exactly where the most interesting things happen.”

Illegal Hit (Out Of Bounds) lands March 27th via YEAR0001.
