Whitechapel Gallery is a hosting free summer arts festival

Whitechapel Gallery is hosting a free summer arts festival: Backyard Biennial:East. Whitechapel Gallery is a public art gallery located in East London on Whitechapel High Street. The venue showcases modern and contemporary art and exhibitions from established and emerging artists. 

For its 125th anniversary, the gallery has initiated a free eight-week summer arts festival, highlighting the various communities in East London. In collaboration with more than 40 artists and organisations, the festival features installations, performances, events, workshops, screenings, and many other media. 

The biennial is a pilot project aiming to highlight the diverse and rich history of East London, showcasing stories of migration and community archives as well as the evolving communities of East London through a range of artists and practices.

It launched on July 14th and will continue to have events, exhibitions and screenings throughout August, featuring a workshop on creative writing, an exhibition from Nathan Akehurst, and a performance from Lydia Newman.

On their social media, they shared: “The programme will embrace East London’s past, present and future: from stories of migration and journeying, ecology and land-use to walking practices, music, community archives and utopian imaginings."
