Following on from the dystopian analogue electronica of Pye Corner Audio on the 3rd July, the discerning venue welcomes the accurately named Awesome Tapes From Africa on August 2nd to bring some groove laden sunshine to the north of England.
The impressively singular project, helmed by music obsessive Brian Shimkovitz has gained intense plaudits through its well loved music blog and record label, which has unearthed a whole raft of music from gifted African musicians that we would have otherwise remained undiscovered.
His Boiler Room appearance (above) will give you an inkling as to what to expect from the visionary sonic pioneer - a heady selection of everything from groove filled West African funk to East African jazz, via soulful South African electronica (hear that in Penny Penny's 'Shichangani' below, just one of the lost works repressed by Shimkovitz), as he mixes and selects tapes discovered in the four corners of Africa for our listening pleasure.
Awesome Tapes From Africa makes his Manchester debut prior to headlining Beacons Festival ahead of a host of other festivals this summer. This will be an unmissable chance to hear some of the most unique, original, and heartfelt music ever recorded in Soup Kitchen's delightfully intimate setting. Very highly recommended.
