Earlier in the summer one of the institutions of the South West reopened to great acclaim. Swindon's Brunel Rooms has a heritage which extends back as far as the acid house era, with legendary appearances from the likes of Carl Cox, Stu Allan and Ratpack, but was in need of a lick of paint and some love before re-opening in August.

It got that, and then some, with a world class soundsystem and a talent list to make the best use of it. So far Pete Tong, Dusky, Roska, and the Plump DJs have been among the people making it work, with further internationally renowned selectors coming. Behind it all are the residents, with house jock Marchal kindly delivering the 29th installment for our Mixcloud series (stream it above). We had a quick chat to discuss the mix with him.

You’ve done a mix for us; thanks! Tell us about it.

It's a smooth transition from chunky remixed classics through to some deep house tracks that are out at the moment, my last few gigs have seen me introduce a lot of the modern style of deep house into my sets. When I first started DJing I was playing mainly funky house and a lot of what people are calling deep house is similar to that, although slightly heavier and with a chunkier bassline. That's pretty much where this mix is at.

Is this reflective of your style as a DJ and what you would play at Brunel Rooms?

Yes I think it is as I have always played along these lines, the system venue and the people behind it, it enabled me to start my DJ career and it gave me a platform and the experience that I needed to move out to other nights across the UK and Europe.

From playing there I have found the genre that I love playing and it leaves me to swing either side of the house spectrum as I always play to a crowd and if they are up for it then I will make them work for it.

When is your next gig at the venue?

My next set is at the Brunel Rooms for the Halloween bash which has Wiley headlining. The last gig I played there was with ZINC and Hostage and was an awesome night.

Any production/studio activity to let us know about?

I'm just starting to dip my toe into the world of producing. It's very much in the learning stages at the moment but I've already figured out the direction that I want to go in, so it's an interesting time for me at the moment.

And finally, what else lies in the future for you?

The big news is I've got a little boy waiting to come into this world, due any day now, which is amazing. I've already got a little lad and we can't wait to see his new brother. Djing wise I have my residency at Brunel Rooms and they are looking after me very well. I'm looking forward to doing some more big nights there and boat parties with Smartie Partie. It's all good.
