When Prince knocked out his sleazy futuristic funk in the eighties, even his far reaching musical vision couldn’t quite get a grapple on what we would be listening to as we lurched towards a new century. Because when we were all partying like it actually was 1999, the vast majority of us were reaching for the lasers for a euphoric, hallucinogenic take on techno – trance.

The last year of the last century was the defining point for the superclub era, and consequently many of the leading players of that time have been in celebratory mood. Cream turned 20 last year side by side with a thoroughly successful reunion project, whilst Gatecrasher will be reaching the same milestone this year with a celebration hinged on the trance sound. One of the DJs at that event, and arguably the definitive resident of the Sheffield superclub, is Scott Bond.

One of the most consistently brilliant DJs of the era, he’s a name that now evokes misty eyed reverence amongst any of the people who would travel from around the country week after week to clubs around the country to follow trance. He’s got a flurry of dates ahead of him that will allow for him showcase that peerless command, taking in the aforementioned GC 20th Anniversary, Slinky, Promise in Newcastle and many more.

The pick though is at Majefa, the Manchester Trance soiree that takes time out from pushing the modern sound of trance to focus on the classics. Alongside Scott’s set they’ve also plumped for two of the more underground names of the era, with hard trance starlets Signum and Italian tech trance leviathan Mario Piu in tow. The latter maybe remembered for his ring tone riffing ‘Communication’ track, but he was at the pinnacle of the BXR sound alongside Mauro Piccotto and Joy Kitikonti. Expect the likes of the below to feature in his set.
