There’s plenty of excitement in Leeds at the moment… not only because it’s the start of a new party season, but so too because legendary venue The Warehouse is up and running again, and tonight plays host to a brand new and expansive party concept, Coloursound.

The first of a sporadic series of parties between now and Christmas (in both Leeds and across the Pennines in Manchester) has the largest line-up of them all.  No less than nine (count them!) headline acts are to play tonight, kicking off with lively duo Round Table Knights who are already owning the packed floor in front of them.

There are all sorts of people here, from fresh-faced freshers to rugged old ravers, now facing a different direction to the one the would have in the past. The DJ booth has wisely been moved and raised, the bar has been extended and, as well as some cosmetic touch-ups, the light and sound in this square rave space has been sharpened immensely thanks to the new Funktion One.

It’s something ensuing acts Jordan Peak, Tiefschwarz and old Detroit master Stacey Pullen  make the most of, with each adding their own distinctive slant to the sonic proceedings of the evening. The first is raw and punchy, the second, Basti, goes down a weirder path with trippy elements and the odd old classic thrown in for good measure.

Judging by the oh-so-vocal reactions throughput Stacey Pullen’s inspired set, though, he is the one most people enjoy. Dropping some deeper kicks with air-punching drops, the odd vocal and generally doing so with plenty of style, people clamber on each other shoulders and bounce up and down approving right until next man Darius Syrossian steps up.

The Leeds local and VIVa hero does a fine job of carrying the no doubt weary souls right through to the small hours of the morning – props, then, to Coloursound for choosing him as one of their residents.  Same goes for resident Cera Alba who did a fine job in the main room earlier in the night.  Meanwhile, in the cosier second room (or Loft as it is aptly known) dropping deeper and more connoisseur beats throughout the night London’s Huxley as well as Crosstown and Hot Creations men Russ Yallop and Richy Ahmed respectively.

Their blend of snaking basslines, disco flecked retro grooves and warm melodies make a nice counterpoint to the more uproarious sounds in the main room, summing up in a nutshell the aim of Coloursound: to provide quality sounds for fans of many genres.  Next stop, Manchester on October 15th
