Back in 2021, Manchester's Night & Day cafe was issued with a noise complaint from a local resident. It immediately put the venue at risk as it prompted the council to step in and threaten the future of what is a beloved cultural institution in the Northern Quarter. Now a year on, it is facing the noise complaint yet again and is facing the risk of closure.

The venue is being criticised especially for the noise that goes on after bands have stopped playing and when DJs play up until the venue's 4AM license. There is now a court case which will determine the future of the venue, it would be hugely disappointing if a city dedicated to culture would close a venue in the city centre due to noise complaints.

Names such as Guy Garvey have come out in support of the Night & Day cafe, and have branded the complaint and the potential of the venue's closure as a disgrace. It is influential in bringing through new indie artists and upcoming DJs and is a crucial part of Manchester's gig circuit.

The argument does not reflect kindly on Manchester Council which is claiming to champion Manchester's music scene. It would be a terrible site to see yet another culturally important space be closed down, especially if residential spaces are being given preferential treatment despite owners knowing that they were moving next to a music venue. You can find a petition to help save the venue here.

In aid of the Night and Day Cafe facing the noise abatement court order, a special gig is being put on a week before it is served. With performances coming from The Lounge Society, Deaf Deaf Deaf, Slap Rash,Soup! and a DJ set from The Orielles. The gig will also be recorded on to cassette and made available for sale on the night. You can purchase tickets here:
