As a massive Lemonheads and Evan Dando fan I am very excited by this new album and you should be too. Finally some good solid…well how can you class their music? It has rock with a twang of country, a spattering of grunge and acoustic beauty. That do you?
For The Lemonheads eighth album Dando convened two of his early influences — the unholy duo of drummer Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag) and bassist Karl Alvarez (Descendents) — in a remote Rocky Mountain hideaway.
You can think of the new album as a Best of the Lemonheads Volume II, featuring songs from the band’s greatest era that didn’t quite yet exist, played a little louder and little faster. “You should listen to the Descendents' Milo Goes to College to get an idea of what the next Lemonheads record sounds like”, says Evan of his newly reformed band. "I wanted to make a rock record, a melodic rock record.” And more to the point, “Also, I'm sick of selling solo T-shirts."
The Lemonheads have lost some of their old school tendencies and been replaced by Dando’s solo style, which isn’t a bad thing, but after all this is ‘The Lemonheads’. If you have ever listened to ‘Baby I’m Bored’ by Dando, you’ll know what I mean and if you haven’t, well you should if you enjoy this album.
The new single, ‘Become The Enemy’ (out now!) is a great choice but is by no means the best song on the album, which speaks volumes for the rest of the album. The lyrics are superb and aren’t your usual ‘oh my girlfriend cheated on me’ wo is me pants.
They have actually put thought into it which is a refreshing change for music today.
We seemed to have suffered with some truly awful bands lately and finally classic bands are making a return.
You will not be disappointed with this album by the awesome Lemonheads.
