Horse Meat Disco at Hare and Hounds review

We sent Hannah Brierley to review some disco goodness in Birmingham.

Disco is the perfect way to escape from the rather troublesome 2016 we’ve been having, and no one serves it better than Horse Meat Disco who’ve been rocking crowds across the globe since their acclaimed debut compilation on Strut in 2009. We went to witness for ourselves the finest deliverers of disco at work at Leftfoot’s event at the Hare and Hounds in Birmingham.

The pub venue had a warm charm, with two bars downstairs and Art Nouveau décor. The positive disco vibes seemed to infect all who were there as all the staff were talkative and friendly. Upstairs was the space occupied by Horse Meat Disco, the quirky and intimate venue made it feel like a funky house party.

The DJs felt as though they were almost dancing with the crowd adding to the electric energy. Despite the small space it never felt too cramped and when they played disco bangers like 'You Should Be Dancing' by The Beegees, everyone obeyed, letting the groovy beats take over.

The atmosphere was overwhelmingly positive, everyone in the crowd was beaming and Horse Meat Disco weren’t afraid to let loose and dance to the music either. They expertly chose which songs to play to keep building up the ecstasy of their spectators, from well known classics like Whitney’s 'How Will I Know' which had us all belting the lyrics like we were in the shower, to more unusual ones like 'Feeling U Should' Know by Alkalino.

The seductive saxophone in this jazzy tune was delightful on the ears and it will definitely be added to our playlist, just another example of HMD’s expert music taste. We danced into the early hours of the morning without even realising the time, proof of a truly enjoyable evening.

Their energetic and eclectic mixture of funk, house and classic disco has landed them a regular slot on Rinse FM and ensures that they continue to sell out shows world-wide. It’s impossible not to be elated when they’re in control of the decks.
