R&B singer Daniel Caesar has begun to tease his new album Son Of Spergy, which seems to feature a host of special guests.
On Instagram two days ago (19th July), Caesar posted a video, tagging Bon Iver, Clairo, Sampha, Dev Hynes (also known as Blood Orange), Rex Orange County, 646yf4t, and Mustafa (who featured on 'Toronto 2014' on Caesar's most-recent LP), leading fans to believe they’ll be featured on the album.
The clip features overlain text that reads: “I’m trying to write a letter announcing the album, but I want it to be profound and clever. I have this secret desire to think and express a thought that’s never been thought before. But alas."
The text continues to tell us about Caesar’s father’s “origin story”, and how he would move to Canada and meet Caesar’s mother.
It continues: “Being young is so interesting because how many times does a person have to hear good advice before it becomes cliche? We resent the cliches of our parents until we become them. I am now the herald all I refused to believe in.
“I’m now the same age my dad was when he had me, and I can’t help but be embarrassed by how much smarter than him I thought I was; because I went to school in Canada and I could construct sentences more eloquently than he could. That’s the thing about the culture here (another cliche), we continually conflate the sounding smart with wisdom. Lately I’ve come to a place where I realize no one will ever think a thought that hasn’t been thought before, nor will anyone try a thing that hasn’t been tried before.
“Everything is vanity. Family is everything. Be truthful and forthright in your dealings. Never forget that god is the only eternal measuring stick for morality. I am nothing, but in my flesh I am Spergy’s Son, and in my spirit I am God’s.”
Caesar and Rex Orange County released two tracks together earlier this year
Although no official date has been confirmed yet, the post was captioned “Son of Spergy. 2025**”.
New website sonofspergy.com has also been set up so fans can sign up for email updates and pre-save the album. It features a clip with a new song snippet.
Caesar’s third and most recent LP, NEVER ENOUGH, was released in 2023.
Caesar is best known for tracks ‘Get You’ featuring Kali Uchis and ‘Best Part’ featuring H.E.R. from his debut 2017 album Freudian, plus his feature on Justin Bieber’s ‘Peaches’. All three tracks have over a billion streams on Spotify.
Caesar also worked on Bieber’s most recent surprise album, SWAG, credited as a producer on the track ‘Devotion’. Caesar also features on Blood Orange's new single, 'The Field'.
Rex Orange County and Caesar have collaborated before, releasing 'Rearrange My World' and 'There’s a Field (That's Only Yours)' earlier this year. The tracks were produced by Rex, Caesar, and Mustafa.
