Crazed culinary competition World Gravy Wrestling Championships return to Bacup

One of the most intriguing and unique events is returning for another year, and tickets are available on Skiddle now. A regional tradition since its 2007 inception, the World Gravy Wrestling Championships will take place at Bacup Cricket Club on Monday 31st August. 

Organised by both Bacup Cricket Club and the Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company, the World Wrestling Gravy Championships features contestants quarreling in a pool of Lancashire gravy. Competitors can also don fancy dress, with the best outfits potentially deciding the outcome of certain matches. Those wanting to take a breather from the live gravy wrestling matches can browse charity stalls and family friendly activities like face painting. 

The coveted culinary championships debuted in 2007 and has been held annually since. Notable coverage for the championships include clips from the 2010 edition being shown on Australian variety program The Footy Show in 2017, and the Guinness World Records featuring the event’s results within its pages in 2019. 

Proceeds from the event will go towards East Lancashire Hospice, with community fundraiser Jackie Morris commenting, “We are truly grateful to the organisers who host this event each year. Our costs to run East Lancashire hospice and all their services is over 4M per year. This helps us to continue to provide care to our Patients and their families. East Lancashire Hospice provides Inpatient care, Hospice at home, Physiotherapy, Complimentary therapy, bathing service, Bereavements and counselling support and Creative support therapies.”
