A review of Mulletover's January Sale at Nettil Warehouse, featuring Micheal Mayer, Joy Orbison and Geddes.

The first and last thing I can say about Mulletover January Sale is the music was spot on.

From the moment we stepped into Nettil Warehouse, Mulletover resident Geddes charmed us with his infectious house tunes that made our feet immediately move.

Smoothly building throughout the set, the beats started gradual and warm developing into funky basslines and uplifting melodies that caused a serious wave of groove across the dancefloor and warmed up perfectly for the main acts.

Next up was king of diversity Joy Orbison, with his melange of music genres that somehow blend seamlessly into a dynamic and surprising set. Dropping all-time classics such as a remix of RnB masterpiece ‘Donell Jones - You know what’s up’, and the Henrik Schwarz Edit of ‘Bill Withers - Who is he’ only proved to stun and excite the crowd, whilst bass-driven dub edits gave the added ‘balls’ to spark the fist pumps and feet stomps.

Lastly was the main man and Kompakt records spearhead Micheal Mayer, who I was extremely looking forward to seeing having been a fan of the label for some time. Stripping the music back from his predecessors, Mayer played an effortless set filled with great house tunes consisting of simple beats and entrancing melodies that seemed appropriate for the time of the morning.

My only bugbear is that by 4am the dancefloor was sparse and there was no real character to the crowd, a real shame for a headliner of this magnitude.

Now on to the bad bits, because no review is perfect right? As much as I liked the warehouse which was essentially one big room, I think any of the revellers would tell you that the heat became a little overpowering at times - never has the term “sweatbox” been more appropriate! The crowd as well were a tad, well iffy, with a mixture of clued-up clubbers, Timmy trendies, and gangster wannabes – seeing people bump and grind to house music is certainly a new one on me!

However despite these minor gripes, the most important element to any night out is the music coming out of the speakers, and the Mulletover January Sale certainly hit the nail on the head here.

If this is the standard every time then I look forward to making Mulletover a regular in my 2012 clubbing calendar.
