Christmas is pretty much here, face facts. We’ve held off going yuletide crazy for a while but the clutches of some fella called Jesus’ Birthday can no longer evade us. There’s trees in every shop, Santa hats and tinsel appearing on night's out and palpable excitement because there's a lit up lorry on TV. So with only a month left before the big day hits us, you need to get prepared.

In amongst the bad socks, gift vouchers and luxurious toiletry options you are no doubt perusing for your loved ones at present, there’s another set of choices you can go for; the experience. We’ve got thousands of events in our cavernous what’s on guides to surprise those close to your heart with a day or night out, so we’ll be bringing you a selection of articles where we cherry pick a selection of options for you to consider this Christmas.

First one is for the slightly older recipient of your gift, with three options which we think could add a bit more weight to that smile when they pluck it out of the stocking. Without further ado...

Rod Stewart

The seemingly ageless Rod Stewart announced last week details of another one of his world beating tours and we have three dates lined up for you. One of the true icons of rock music, Stewart first came to prominence as lead singer of The Faces before entering a career that would see him become one of the biggest draws across the globe; head here to hear exactly what this tour entails.

His gravel voiced charm has since ensured he has sold out stadium shows across the planet for the past four decades (not to mention a recording career that started over fifty years ago), and this whistle stop arena tour of the UK will once again ensure his longevity, showcasing his stunning showmanship. If you know a fan of his, what better way than to reward them with a ticket to see him in the flesh?

Alexander O’Neal

If there’s a soul lover amongst the list of people you need to purchase presents for this Christmas, then tickets to see this titan of the genre are surely an option worth considering. As one of the most recognisable voices of the eighties, O’Neal’s sweat soaked soul was built on a carnal backbone which gave his earthy lilt a glorious urgency, making him a sex symbol of the decade in the process.

His ballads had a sensuality that lifted them well above the syrupy smooth alternatives at the time, whilst his performances were renowned for combining the sheer physicality of his voice and presence with a raw emotional quality that was hard to define. Gee, we’re getting a bit hot and bothered just typing all this. He plays Manchester’s Ritz on Boxing Day, and you can check out this eighties soul inspired playlist we made recently to get you right in the mood.

Hacienda NYE

For many of you reading this, spending your weekend cocooned in the familiar feel of electronic music is a frequent occurrence. The hedonistic allure of the rave has been a part of British culture for nearly thirty years, and whilst it's primarily a practice enjoyed by the youth maybe this year is the chance you give someone with a bit more mileage on the clock to relive it all, an even more perfect option when New year's Eve is on the horizon. Enter the Hacienda.

Still the defining club with which acid house's impact is measured against, this New Year's Eve sees a huge bill bringing Frankie Knuckles, Todd Terry and Marshall Jefferson to Manchester to represent the ameraican aspect of acid house. Head here for more information.
