Cut Ribbons first hit our radar with 'Clouds', an amalgamation of glacial melodies, sparkling synths and melt in your mouth vocals taken from their forthcoming album We Want To Watch Something We Loved Burn.

It's a formula that marks out a rocketing trajectory for the synth directed outfit, and one that's lapped up praise from influential figures like Huw Stephens on Radio 6.

With the imminent album release date firmly etched into our calendar, we found it necessary to dig a little deeper and find out more about an album we expect to ooze with depth and serenity.

Fortunately for us, lead Aled Rees took us up on our offer and let us in on some album intricacies.

What does the album represent?

It represents a bit of a mile stone having actually completed the album and just being really happy with the way it sounds. Our relationship with our producer Jeremy Murphy has been prolific over the last year, having such a good rapport makes everything exciting and full of colour. We couldn't be more elated with it.

Where does it stand musically?

We feel that it covers a pretty wide spectrum. There are big synth driven pop tunes  like ‘Clouds’ and there are also more introverted tracks like ‘Truth in Numbers’. That has always been really important to us, to vary the way the tracks make you feel as the album goes on. Hopefully it's a collection of songs that speak to different people in different ways. That being said, writing about music is like dancing about architecture

Pick out a lyric from the album and why does that stand out?

The obvious choice is, 'We Want to Watch Something We Loved Burn' as we named the album after it. The whole idea of reckless abandon and the rebellious quality shouts youth. We wanted elements of the album to have a more playful side to it as well as having a darker timbre in some songs. It's hard to put into words why that lyric feels so important. It represents more of a feeling that we all have and it’s that line that connects us to that.

Favourite song to perform?

‘Clouds’ is lots of fun live. It's so energetic and makes you want to move. It's easy to get lost in it on stage and we have to constantly reel ourselves in. We love a big anthemic sound, something that you can physically feel and ‘Clouds’ wraps that up in a neat 4 minutes - which only feels about 30 seconds when you are playing live. It's over too quick. There are a lot of songs that feel like that on this album.

Tell us something we wouldn't know about it?

The trumpets in ‘I'm a Wretch’ were played by our manager, Jen Long. She flew over to Belfast, trumpet in tow, to lay down a couple of tracks. It was a great day. We had finished the bulk of the recording and were doing things like extra percussion, glock, hand claps and some crazy Sigur Ros falsetto singing. That day was fuelled by red wine and very little else. Such a great memory.

Thanks guys.
