Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel have cemented their reputation as a leading musical force in 2004 with their album Talkie Walkie crashing into the Top 3 and spawning a series of great pop singles. Alpha Beta Gaga continues in that vein with the catchiest of refrains and an inspired remix from hip hop don Mark Ronson.
For those already familiar with the dreamy whistlings of Alpha Beta Gaga but not sure why, the song has soundtracked a new TV advert for mobile phone company Orange, and weaved its way into the heads of many an unsuspecting soul. The track typifies Air's gift for crafting a sound both utterly unearthly but still full of human feeling and wit, lifting the listener to another place but keeping their feet firmly on the ground.
Mark Ronson is possibly the most unlikely of remix partners but proves to be utterly at home among the Gallic pair's otherworldly beats, keeping the originals bounce beautifully, and adding a heavy dose of his finest rhymes. An absolute masterstroke of a coupling, it will take the track to a whole new audience and gives enough bottom end funk for many a dance floor.
The Jackson remix takes the track into altogether more leftfield and bugged out territory. The French newcomer produces a glitch-hop odyssey that will intrigue and confuse in equal measure, but never loses the charm of the original.
Air play the following live dates over the summer months...
August 3rd London Royal Festival Hall
August 4th London Somerset House
August 10th Edinburgh Corn Exchange
August 13th St. Austell Eden Project
August 15th Leicester Summer Sundae Festival
