Biography

I originally started playing records around 16 years ago...born out of a passion for music probably instilled before birth. It seems like only yesterday I brought my decks from a guy named “Paul” in Battersea after seeing a pair of Technic 1210’s advertised in a newspaper....(yes a newspaper and not social media!)

It was not before long that I had taught myself to mix with the help of a 1 day DJ course at Morley College and after a few months I began recording tapes....(yes ...I did say tapes....). I can’t remember exactly how it happened but one of my “tapes” made it to a man who was running House fm at the time. He gave me a shot at a Sunday evening slot, 10pm - 12am where I spun house music under my earlier DJ name, Sole Intent.

It was whilst on this radio station that my love for House music continued to grow and deepen. I spent a good few years on House fm and played at many of their parties, including the stations early birthday party at the Ministry of Sound which will forever stand out as a defining moment. In due course I left House fm to join Push fm with the same slot and enjoyed a few years playing on their digital station and at their various parties. After Push fm I joined Bang Radio, a station closer to home based in Harlesden, where I spent a year producing a much more formal show with a more eclectic selection of music.

All the while I was also hitting the dance floor hard and coming to know my own house heroes....from the UK being inspired by parties like Need2Soul at the Key Club, Soulmates at Clandestino and by DJ’s/Producers like Giles Peterson, Rap Saunders, Dennis Christensen, Neil Pierce, Joey Negro, Marcia Carr....and from further afield artists like Ron Trent, DJ Deep, Trinidadian Deep, Osunlade, Quentin Harris, Tyrone Francis....and the list goes on ....and continues to go on!

In terms of gigs I’ve been fortuntate to play many clubs and bars around london as well as abroad, including Rome’s IPM party (Room 26) and for the Celebration of Life and Friends affair in Brussels (Nick Blow). Whilst my love for playing music has never died, after a while the passion began to fade and I put my headphones down in 2011 whilst I embarked on a four year academic endeavour. After earning my degree I travelled for a year and the thought of ever DJing again seemed to drift further away from me.

As it happened when I returned to London in 2017, I was booked by Marcia Carr for her Girlz Be Like Party at the Book Club and so it was that my love and passion for music and DJing was reinvigorated. After being away for such a long time I decided I wanted to play under the name DJ DuBois....I felt like a new person....I felt like me...DuBois being my surname it just made sense. Since then more gigs have come my way...in rather a sporadic fashion....but come they do....and when they arrive I’m always filled with gratitude to be able to do what I love....For me there are few better feelings than creating a vibe through sound and getting that feedback from the dancers...the energy exchange is sacred.

Although I predominantly DJ house music, as a musician my musical tastes span a wide spectrum of sounds....from jazz to soul to hip hop to broken beat to house. My favourite kind of sets are when I can explore all of these genres with open minded listeners and dancers.

I do this strictly for the love and ALWAYS with a conscious intention to positively raise the vibration and the frequency...so let’s be avin ya!
