Biography

Death Ape Disco is a hard rock/alternative metal/variant metal band with elements of grunge and influences from bands such as Black Label Society, Alice in Chains, Tool and Vision Of Disorder to Down, Crowbar and Nothingface. Death Ape Disco’s current line-up formed in Brighton, East Sussex, in the United Kingdom in 2011. The band is composed of Rob Rainford(Vocals) (Stone Giant), Kit Brice(Vocals, Guitar), James Boulstridge (Guitar), Sam Curtis (bass) and Harry Lehane (drums).

History

The band has been playing many years under different guises and line-ups. Initially starting in Colchester, Essex, around 2003/4 as a Pantera influenced southern metal stlye group with Rob Rainford playing Guitar and with several other members including Dave Atkins (lead guitar) and Sam Curtis (bass) (Stone Giant, Quantum Bigfoot, Desert Monkey) , the band moved to Brighton in 2005/6, lost member Sam Curtis and began progressing into different styles and sounds, broadening their influences. Upon reaching Brighton the band became known as Tophex and rapidly went through several other members including Rob Atkin (drums), James 'Supercunt' Gallagher (Bass, cunt, Thief), and others too numerous to name until Tom Newland (Drums) and 'Platypus' Bill Clayton (bass) joined and the band began gigging in earnest. Tom and Bill left in 2011 after an amicable split. Sam Curtis re-joined the band in July 2011 and drummer Harry Lehane joined early 2012. The band is currently playing shows around the sussex area and writing new material.

Styles and writing

Although Robert Rainford is primarily lead vocalist, Kit Brice sings nearly as much and several songs, including Death Ape Disco, effectively have two lead vocal parts harmonised throughout the entire song, influenced heavily by Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and other early 90s rock/grunge groups. Vocals are mostly written jointly by Kit and Rob.

The Guitar parts are mainly written by Kit Brice and James Boulstridge although Robert Rainford also writes some guitar parts. Live Boulstridge and Brice share the role of Lead Guitarist between different songs.

The bass parts were initially written by Kit Brice, usually following the guitar lines, but since Sam Curtis joining bass parts are primarily now written by him.

The band’s method of recording is using Pro Tools, Logic and Cubase in a home recording studio. They most often adopt a “write and record” technique, recording different parts as they are created. This has had the effect of prolonging the time it takes to write new material although the band is generally happier with the final versions of tracks when they are completed. This also meant that on their recordings the drums tended to be digital and the bass parts are played by Kit, though, again, since the introduction of both Harry and Sam these parts are now played live. So far all recordings (Big Top and the deep blue sea, Foresee The Fall, Death Ape Disco, Headrush, Return of the sound, Nuclear Zombie Death Apocalypse, Burn The Red City, Grinding Down The Sun and Eclipse) have been created in this manner
