Midweek Madness at York Dungeon takes you back through 2,000 years of York’s darker history. The experience uses live actors, immersive sets and special effects to bring the city’s past to life, from Vikings and their Saxon enemies to characters including Guy Fawkes and Isabella Billington.

You will also encounter the Black Plague and the torture chamber as you move through a series of scenes that let you see, hear and smell York’s murky past. It is a history-led attraction with a strong theatrical element, designed to be both entertaining and atmospheric.

The York Dungeon describes the attraction as a journey through the city’s “most ‘orrible history”, with a mix of learning, live performance and interactive storytelling throughout.

Key facts: Children aged 5 and over are permitted, but the York Dungeon is not recommended for under 8s. The attraction is cashless, so any on-site payments must be made using a contactless bank card.

Access: most facilities are designed to be fully accessible, but the York Dungeon is in a grade 2 listed building and this does create some restrictions for guests with mobility issues.

Accessible parking is not available on site for blue badge holders. The nearest car parks are Castle Car Park, YO1 9SA, and Piccadilly Car Park, YO1 9NX; both have blue badge bays. These car parks are not operated by the York Dungeon, and use of the bays is subject to the car park operator’s terms and conditions.
