About

Footprints Jazz is delighted to announce a percussion workshop with Marc Gómez and Pol Sanchez, visitin from Barcelona down at Alder.

In this workshop, we will explore the history of the Romani people and the fusion that makes flamenco and Catalan rumba possible. We will learn the palos, rhythmic and harmonic structures, basic patterns, and listen to and play music together. We will also discuss more modern fusions with other styles, such as jazz, and how flamenco is becoming a major fusion genre within world music and jazz.

Marc "Dino" Gómez Masdeu is a Catalan drummer and percussionist, from Vilanova, Spain. He completed his intermediate studies in drums and percussion at L'Aula de Música Moderna i Jazz de Barcelona, and later earned a Bachelor in jazz drums and modern music at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu, also in Barcelona.

Pol Sanchez, AKA "El Paio de Gràcia", is a Catalan guitarist, singer, and composer. He studied classical guitar from a young age until he was 18, when he began his intermediate studies in modern jazz guitar at l'Aula de Música Moderna i Jazz de Barcelona.

He was raised in Barcelona's Gracia neighbourhood, popular for being one of the nests of the Rumba Catalana style. As a performer, he's been playing rumba catalana professionally for at least 15 years. He started playing in a Rumba covers band all around Catalonia and then started his own project with Marc Gomez called "El Paio de Gràcia and Las Malas Lenguas".
