Hay Fever is a new production of Noël Coward’s comedy, directed by Emily Burns. Emmy, two-time Tony, Screen Actors Guild and Drama Desk winner Christine Baranski makes her West End debut as Judith Bliss, with Academy Award nominated Richard E. Grant also in the cast.
Set in the Blisses’ country home, the play follows retired stage star Judith, who invites a young fan to stay for the weekend because she misses the applause. Her husband David, a novelist, and their children Sorrel and Simon are absorbed in their own lives, and the household quickly turns into a tangle of guests, parlour games, put-downs and unrequested encores.
Noël Coward’s story centres on a family that is poorly suited to hosting and unwilling to compromise, so the weekend becomes a clash of personalities as much as a social gathering.
