The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre is Matthew Bourne’s award-winning dance production, loosely based on Bizet’s opera Carmen. It is set in a greasy 1950s garage-diner in the American Mid-West, where a small town is disrupted by the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger.
The story follows the town’s growing tensions as heat, desire and ambition drive the characters into a cycle of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Matthew Bourne’s storytelling is paired with one of New Adventures’ most recognisable scores, combining music by Terry Davies with Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite after Bizet’s Carmen.
This production is presented as a dance thriller, with a strong dramatic focus and a score that underpins the action throughout.
